Tennessee basics for every business

Workers’ comp. Most Tennessee employers outside construction and coal mining must carry workers’ compensation once they have five or more employees, full- or part-time, per the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Even below that number, many owners choose to carry it.

Workers’ comp for construction. Tennessee requires construction employers to carry workers’ compensation for their employees even if they have only one, including part-time and family workers, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Some construction business owners can apply to exempt themselves (not their employees) through the state’s exemption registry.

Commercial plates. In Tennessee, a vehicle with a commercial license plate must be covered under a commercial auto policy, according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue.

We can review your requirements and help you shop workers’ compensation and other coverages, subject to underwriting.

What business insurance do I need in Tennessee?

It depends on your work, employees, vehicles, and contracts. Many businesses start with general liability or a BOP and add workers’ comp, commercial auto, and professional liability as needed.

Is general liability insurance required in Tennessee?

State law generally doesn’t require it for every business, but contracts, landlords, and some licenses do. For example, the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors requires general liability to get a contractor’s license.
